1. Plan Ahead

One common mistake that students make is to not give themselves enough time to study for an approaching exam or quiz. As soon as an examination is announced in class or if an exam schedule is provided in a syllabus, it is a good practice to record these down ahead of time in either a personal calendar or planner. Making a physical (or digital) record of when to expect a future exam to take place can only help in looking ahead when it comes to organizing one’s time. Not only does this practice aid in creating future study schedules, but it can come in handy with planning personal activities such as doctor appointments, after school activities, and personal celebrations.

2. Create your Own Study Schedule

Teachers sometimes provide their students with a recommended guideline for what content to review for an exam, but not every student needs to review the same topics to the same extent. For that reason, it’s important to create your own study schedule in order to ensure that you can dedicate an adequate amount of time to subject areas you may struggle with. There are many ways you can create your personal study schedule, however it is important to block out dedicated time for you to review 1-2 topics at a time. Furthermore, it is advisable to spread this study time out over the course of a few days.

3. Ask Questions

Whether it is because they are unfamiliar with a teacher’s examination format or they are being tested on a brand new subject, test anxiety can manifest for students as a result of not knowing what to expect from any given exam. Here is where asking questions ahead of time can be helpful to not only reduce anxiety, but also to help plan out what material must be reviewed. Asking questions about the form and content of the test can help to set your expectations for how the exam may go for you, and in doing so, provide a sense of confidence that can counteract the effects of test anxiety. While asking questions in-person is often preferable, sending an email can help those who may feel nervous talking to a teach directly. Finally, be sure to ask follow-up questions and clarifying questions to help affirm your understanding.

4. Stick to your Study Schedule

As previously mentioned, it is important to designate specific time for you to study. Part of this reasoning is to ensure that you are not overworking yourself and grant your mind the proper amount of time to commit the reviewed information to memory. Without time to process information, the time spent studying would go to waste. Additionally, persistent studying without adequate breaks can cause mental burn out and increased stress levels.

5. Take Care of yourself

While this final step may seem intuitive, it is actually the most important because an unsound body and mind can seriously affect your performance during an exam. Make sure to eat healthy and exercise periodically to help maintain your physical health.
